The Bachelor of Arts in History and Modern Languages program at the University of Southampton Malaysia offers a unique opportunity to combine your passion for history with the study of French, German, or Spanish. With a diverse range of experts in various fields, exploring time periods from the Classical world to the present day and geographical areas across the globe, you'll have the flexibility to choose topics that align with your interests. By studying a modern language, you will not only gain linguistic proficiency but also gain insights into and experience another culture. You can even choose a language that you have not previously studied, as the program provides additional teaching hours and funding for a language course abroad to facilitate rapid progress. As part of the program, you will spend a year abroad on a placement, either in a workplace, at the British Council, or at a partner university. This immersive experience will further enhance your language skills and provide invaluable cultural exposure. The combination of history and modern languages in this program offers a rich and comprehensive education, preparing you for a wide range of career opportunities with an international focus.

Compulsory history modules will introduce you to continuities and changes across societies and the ideas that have shaped the world. You’ll also develop your critical study skills using original source materials.
At the end of year 1 you can choose to take a summer course abroad in your language if you did not study it before the degree.
